The story of our Atomic Octopus Flags stretches back more than a decade. Long before our camp became Atomic Octopus, we had flags of bright red and white or red and yellow flags waving above our camp at Burning Man. They helped friends and campmates find us among the thousands of camps in Black Rock City. Today, our camp has a brand-new identity, and it deserves a fresh new look. Therefore, this year we created a new set of Atomic Octopus Flags that perfectly match the camp’s bold purple and orange color scheme.

Atomic Octopus Flags for a New Era
Our camp has changed quite a bit over the years. Camp founders came from Magic Hand Camp, Manatee Love Society, Vault Of Hell and Space Island. Then we formed Eridu Society, and later became Brainy Bar. Now, for 2026, we have fully embraced our new identity as Atomic Octopus.

With that new name came a new visual style. Purple and brilliant orange now define our camp, from our artwork to our signs and decorations. As a result, our longtime red and yellow flags no longer reflected the camp we have become. We wanted new flags that honored our history while celebrating the next chapter of our Burning Man adventure.
Handmade at Atomic Octopus HQ
Instead of ordering custom flags, we decided to make them ourselves at Atomic Octopus HQ in Las Vegas. Rolls of brilliant orange and rich purple ripstop fabric soon covered the worktables. After careful measuring and cutting, the sewing machines came to life.

Of course, every creative project at headquarters attracts a little extra attention. Our resident Art Cats quickly volunteered as quality control inspectors. They climbed onto the fabric, supervised every sewing step, and occasionally insisted on becoming part of the project themselves. Their methods may not speed production, but they certainly keep everyone smiling.

Little by little, the new Atomic Octopus Flags took shape. Before long, every seam was complete, and the finished flags looked ready to face another year of playa winds.
Packed and Ready for the Playa
Today, the new flags are rolled up, packed, and ready for the journey to Black Rock City. Soon they will fly high above camp, guiding longtime friends home while helping first-time visitors discover Atomic Octopus for the very first time.

Some traditions deserve to continue. Others deserve a thoughtful update. Our Atomic Octopus Flags do both. They honor more than a decade of Burning Man history while proudly representing the future of our camp. We can’t wait to watch them dancing in the desert sky and welcoming everyone to Atomic Octopus once again.
