One of the best ways to experience Burning Man is through the Art Of Participation. Every year, tens of thousands of people come together to create Black Rock City. While some participants build camps or create art, many others choose to contribute by volunteering their time and energy. This helps make the event possible.
In fact, volunteers play an important role in nearly every aspect of Black Rock City. For example, from welcoming participants at the city gates to delivering postcards across the playa, volunteer teams help create the unique experience through their gifts of time. This makes Burning Man so special.
Moreover, volunteering offers something more than just an opportunity to help. It provides a chance to meet new people. Additionally, you can learn new skills and become part of a community working toward a common goal.
Why Volunteer?
Many participants discover that volunteering becomes one of the most rewarding parts of their burn. Not only does it provide a deeper connection to the city, but it also offers opportunities to interact with people from all walks of life. Participation is one of our favorite principles.
Furthermore, taking a volunteer shift often leads to unexpected friendships and memorable experiences. Whether you’re a first-time participant or a longtime veteran, volunteering can help you see Black Rock City from an entirely new perspective.
Most importantly, volunteering allows participants to actively contribute to the event rather than simply observing it. The Art Of Participation comes alive when people step forward and help create the city together.
Gate & Greeters At Black Rock City
For many participants, volunteering begins with one of the first departments they encounter: Gate, Perimeter & Exodus (GPE) and then Greeters.

Gate, Perimeter & Exodus volunteers help manage some of the most important operations in Black Rock City. They assist participants as they arrive at the event. Moreover, they help monitor and protect the city’s perimeter and support the safe departure of tens of thousands of people during Exodus at the end of the week. As a result, GPE volunteers play an important role in keeping the city operating smoothly. This continues from opening day until the final participant leaves the playa.
Meanwhile, Greeters provide one of the most memorable experiences at Burning Man. After participants pass through the Gate, Greeters help mark the transition from the default world to life on the playa. In addition, they distribute the annual What, Where, When Guide, which helps participants discover art, events, workshops, performances, and countless other experiences throughout the city. Furthermore, Greeters answer questions, share helpful information, and help first-time Burners feel at home.
Together, these two departments help shape the first impressions that participants have of Burning Man. Whether helping someone arrive safely, providing directions, sharing information, or welcoming a newcomer with enthusiasm, GPE and Greeters demonstrate the Art Of Participation from the very first moments of the event.
Helping Build the Neighborhoods
Another important volunteer opportunity can be found with Placement.
Placement volunteers help organize the city and support the theme camps that bring interactivity and creativity to Black Rock City. Although much of this work takes place behind the scenes, it has a lasting impact on the experience of thousands of participants.
Consequently, Placement volunteers play an important role in helping the city come together each year. Months before the event, they work to help review placement questionnaires and fill in the city map. Teams arrive early to help place flags to mark each of the spots for over 1,200 placed camps. Then they meet and greet camp leads upon arrival, and take them to their camp’s location. They are also available throughout the week to help resolve issues and get feedback.
Keeping Things Cool at Arctica
Few departments are as universally appreciated as Arctica.
Throughout the event, Arctica volunteers help distribute ice that participants use to keep food fresh and stay hydrated in the desert heat. While the work can be busy, it also provides a fantastic opportunity to meet people from across the city. Additionally, it’s also a great way to keep cool!

In addition, many volunteers enjoy the fast-paced atmosphere and strong sense of teamwork that develops during a shift. For countless Burners, Arctica becomes a highlight of their volunteer experience.
Delivering a Little Playa Magic
Some of the most memorable volunteer opportunities come from organizations like the BRC Post Office.
Every year, volunteers sort, route, and deliver postcards and letters throughout Black Rock City. In many cases, they travel by bicycle throughout Black Rock City in search of camps and participants.

As a result, these volunteers help create small moments of surprise and delight that recipients often remember long after the event ends. A postcard delivered in the middle of the desert can feel like pure magic.
There Is a Place for Everyone
One of the best things about the Art Of Participation is that there are opportunities for nearly every interest, skill set, and experience level.
Some volunteer roles involve working directly with participants. Others focus on logistics, operations, communications, or support services. Likewise, some shifts are highly structured, while others offer opportunities for creativity and exploration.
Because of this variety, many participants are able to find a team that matches their interests and schedule.
The Art Of Participation Makes Black Rock City Possible
Ultimately, Black Rock City exists because people choose to contribute. Every volunteer shift, every helping hand, and every act of service helps create the experience that participants enjoy each year.
Therefore, if you’ve ever wondered how to become more involved, volunteering is a great place to start. Not only will you help support the city, but you’ll also gain a deeper appreciation for the people and departments that make it all possible. If you have not already done so, check out Jane Lyons’ excellent piece in the Burning Man Journal: A City To Truly Call Your Own.
The Art Of Participation is more than one of the 10 principles. It is one of the foundations of Burning Man itself. By volunteering, you become part of the story, help strengthen the community, and contribute to the shared effort. This transforms an empty desert into Black Rock City.
Getting involved is easier than you think, and you may already have taken the first steps. You start with a Burner Profile. If you already have one, log in. If not, then you can easily create one. From there, you just click on the button marked Volunteer, and fill out a Volunteer Questionnaire. If you want to know more about the various departments and groups, check out this page.
Feedback Loop
We wanted to take a moment to share our experiences using generative tools to create some of the images featured in this piece.
As we have mentioned before, we are experimenting with generative AI for several reasons. First, we want to learn how these tools work. Second, we want to explore their creative possibilities. Finally, we simply want to have some fun along the way.
By providing the tools with images of our Atomic Octopus installation, we have generated some fascinating results. In some cases, the tools created playful new interpretations of our artwork. In other cases, they produced completely unexpected and often hilarious images using ethically sourced training materials and public domain information.

For example, the lamplighters image may be the strangest result we have seen so far. Somehow, the tool did a surprisingly good job recreating the lamplighter robes. However, it completely misunderstood the actual process of lamplighting. At the same time, it decided to populate the scene with what looks like an entire clone army of stock-photo models wearing sunglasses. To this day, we still have no idea how it arrived at that particular creative decision.
Nevertheless, those surprising moments are part of what makes these experiments so entertaining. While some results closely resemble the original inspiration, others take unexpected detours into the wonderfully absurd.
We hope you are enjoying these creative experiments as much as we are. Furthermore, we look forward to sharing more Atomic Octopus adventures and generative art explorations in the future.
