Burning Man Generator Guide: Safe Power and Fuel Tips for the Playa

For many theme camps, a generator quietly powers the week. It keeps refrigerators cold, charges batteries, runs lighting, supports camp infrastructure, and helps create the welcoming spaces that make Black Rock City such an extraordinary place. When everything is working properly, most participants hardly notice it. That is exactly the goal. A well-maintained generator should be reliable, reasonably quiet, and operated safely enough that campmates can focus on the experience rather than the equipment. Whether you are taking responsibility for your camp’s generator for the first time or simply looking for a few practical ideas before heading to the playa, this Burning Man Generator Guide will help you prepare.

Burning Man Generator Guide

Before diving in, there is one important point worth emphasizing. Burning Man publishes official requirements covering fuel storage, hazardous materials, and generator safety. Every camp should read and follow those requirements before arriving in Black Rock City. The suggestions in this guide are intended to complement those rules. We offer practical lessons that Atomic Octopus has learned through many years of camping, volunteering, and operating a theme camp. Whenever official guidance applies, always begin there.

Preparation Means Freedom

Preparation has become a recurring theme throughout the Atomic Octopus Pro Tips series because good preparation creates freedom. Testing equipment at home means fewer surprises on the playa. Organizing supplies before departure makes camp setup smoother. Most importantly, taking care of infrastructure allows everyone to spend more time exploring Black Rock City. Less time solving preventable problems. If you have not already done so, our Get Your Playa Prep On and Tent Tips articles offer a helpful overview of preparing for the adventure ahead.

Service Your Generator Before Burning Man

By the time August arrives, your generator should already be running well. If it is not, finding a repair shop with an open appointment can become a stressful race against the calendar. Generator service centers often become extremely busy as camping season reaches its peak, and waiting until the last minute rarely works in your favor.

Atomic Octopus prefers a different approach. The camp schedules generator maintenance during the fall whenever possible. Shops are usually much less busy, there is no deadline looming, and technicians have more time to perform routine service. The generator is then ready long before the next Burn begins.

Fuel in a bin

Even if your generator seems to be running perfectly, start it at home before loading it into the truck. Let it warm up, verify that it runs smoothly, and make sure it comfortably handles the electrical load your camp expects to place on it. Discovering a problem in your driveway is far better than discovering it after arriving on the playa.

Burning Man Generator Guide: Be a Good Neighbor

Reliable power is important. Being a good neighbor is just as important. Generators vary dramatically in both design and condition. A modern inverter generator may barely be noticeable from a short distance away, while an older construction generator can dominate an entire neighborhood with its noise.

Fortunately, there are ways to improve the situation, even if replacing the generator is not practical this year. Start by testing it. Stand about six to ten feet away while it is running. If two people can comfortably carry on a conversation without raising their voices, your generator is probably in good shape. If normal conversation becomes difficult, consider building a sound baffle before leaving for Burning Man.

Dampen The Noise

A sound baffle does not need to be complicated. Many camps build simple wooden enclosures that reduce noise while still allowing plenty of airflow for cooling. Lining the inside with scrap carpeting, moving blankets, or other sound-absorbing material can noticeably reduce engine noise without restricting ventilation. The goal is not to completely enclose the generator. Instead, it is to redirect and absorb sound before it spreads throughout camp.

Placement matters just as much. Take a few moments to think about where both the sound and the exhaust will travel. Pointing either toward your own tents or a neighboring camp is an easy way to create unnecessary discomfort. A small adjustment in orientation can make a remarkable difference for everyone nearby.

This idea extends beyond generators. Throughout Black Rock City, every camp shares the same temporary neighborhood. Keeping noise under control, respecting quiet hours when appropriate, and thinking about how your infrastructure affects others are all simple ways to practice good citizenship while contributing to a better experience for everyone. In many ways, it reflects the same spirit explored in The Art of Participation. Building a great camp is not only about taking care of your own group. It is also about helping create a welcoming neighborhood for the entire city.

Give Your Generator Some Breathing Room

The Black Rock Desert can be surprisingly hard on mechanical equipment. As the day progresses, the playa surface absorbs heat like an enormous pizza stone. Temperatures climb, dust fills the air, and generators work for hours at a time under demanding conditions.

One simple improvement can help. Rather than placing the generator directly on the playa, Atomic Octopus recommends raising it several inches or even a foot off the ground whenever practical. In earlier years, the camp built a sturdy wooden platform for this purpose. More recently, oversized wheel kits have become a favorite solution because they lift the generator off the playa while making it much easier to move around camp.

Elevation improves airflow underneath the generator, helps reduce heat buildup, and limits the amount of fine playa dust entering the air intake during normal operation. Dust storms will always challenge your equipment, but reducing everyday exposure helps your generator stay cleaner throughout the week.

Pack a Generator Tool Kit

A generator is only one piece of the equation. The supplies that support it deserve just as much attention. Before leaving home, spend a few minutes looking through the owner’s manual and making a checklist of basic maintenance items. Most generator manuals include recommended oil types, spark plug information, replacement air filters, and routine service intervals. If you no longer have the printed manual, chances are excellent that you can download a PDF from the manufacturer’s website. Atomic Octopus recommends saving a copy to your phone before leaving home. Even if you never need it, having it available offline can save a lot of frustration on the playa.

Occo Generator Packing

In addition to your normal camp tools, consider packing:

  • The correct engine oil
  • A spare spark plug
  • Replacement air and fuel filters
  • A funnel
  • An oil drain pan
  • Shop towels or absorbent rags
  • Basic hand tools needed for routine maintenance

Hopefully, none of those supplies will leave the toolbox. However, if your generator needs attention during the week, having the right equipment on hand makes the repair much easier while helping prevent accidental spills.

Enzyme Treatment

One more item has earned a permanent place in the Atomic Octopus generator kit: a bottle of enzyme-based fuel treatment. It is inexpensive and takes up almost no room in your bin. It helps the fuel system deal with small amounts of moisture or contamination. No additive replaces good maintenance or careful fuel handling. It does provides a little insurance if a few drops of water or some fine playa dust find their way into the tank. Like many of the tools in the generator kit, it is something you hope never becomes necessary, but you will be glad you packed it if the need arises.

That preparation also supports Leave No Trace. Using a funnel and drain pan keeps oil and fuel where they belong instead of on the playa. Should maintenance become necessary, taking a few extra minutes to work carefully protects both your equipment and the desert.

Fill Fuel Cans With Expansion in Mind

Fuel behaves differently in the desert than it does at home. Gasoline expands as temperatures rise. A fuel can that seems perfectly full in a cool garage may build significant pressure after sitting in the Nevada sun for several hours.

For that reason, Atomic Octopus recommends filling gasoline containers to roughly 80 percent of their capacity instead of topping them off completely. That extra air space allows the fuel room to expand safely during temperature swings throughout the week. If you or your campmates are shopping for gas cans or planning to upgrade your existing gear, consider this. We recommend duck-billed gas caps (shown below). They allow the vapor to escape safely with no chance of spills.

Duck-Billed Gas Cap

Although most modern generators will run happily on regular unleaded gasoline, the camp has gradually adopted another practice. Whenever practical, Atomic Octopus fills generator cans with high-quality fuel before heading to Burning Man. The generator will spend the week operating under demanding conditions at high desert elevation, and the extra care is inexpensive insurance for one of the hardest-working pieces of equipment in camp.

There is another practical benefit as well. Any fuel remaining at the end of the event can usually be transferred into campmates’ gasoline-powered vehicles before everyone heads home, helping ensure that very little goes to waste.

Burning Man Generator Guide: Fuel Safety Comes First

When generators and gasoline share the same camp, thoughtful planning becomes essential. Burning Man publishes detailed requirements covering fuel storage, hazardous materials, and fire safety. Every camp should review those requirements before arriving on the playa and make sure everyone responsible for generator operations understands them. Those rules exist because Black Rock City is a real city, and mistakes involving fuel can have serious consequences.

Atomic Octopus builds on those requirements with one simple philosophy. Treat fuel with respect every single time. Keep generators and fuel containers well separated. Avoid storing either near tents, sleeping areas, or parked vehicles whenever possible. Pay attention to generator exhaust, not only for fire safety but also to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide exposure. Burning Man’s Emergency Services Department has responded to both camp fires and carbon monoxide incidents over the years. Those reminders underscore why careful planning matters so much.

Good fuel safety is not complicated. It simply requires consistency. The few extra minutes spent planning your generator area before the event begins can help protect your campmates, your neighbors, and everyone who visits your camp throughout the week.

Burning Man Generator Guide: Secondary Containment Is Required

Secondary containment is not simply a good idea. It is a requirement for fuel storage at Burning Man. Burning Man’s fuel safety requirements call for approved secondary containment to help prevent fuel spills from reaching the playa. In addition to creating an environmental hazard, improperly stored fuel may attract the attention of the Bureau of Land Management or Burning Man’s Emergency Services personnel. Taking a few minutes to plan your fuel storage before arriving is much easier than dealing with a preventable problem during the event.

The idea behind secondary containment is straightforward. If a fuel can develops a leak or is accidentally knocked over, the secondary container catches the fuel before it reaches the desert floor. That extra layer of protection supports both environmental stewardship and Leave No Trace, while helping keep your camp safe.

Burning Man Generator Guide

For many years, Atomic Octopus, like countless other camps, relied on inexpensive plastic kiddie pools. They were easy to find, inexpensive, and appeared to solve the problem. Experience gradually changed that opinion. Although kiddie pools will catch small spills, they are made from relatively thin plastic. Gasoline can soften that material over time, and an empty kiddie pool can easily become windblown MOOP if it is not properly secured.

Burning Man Generator Guide: Bins For The Win

Today, Atomic Octopus recommends a sturdier solution. The 27-gallon black-and-yellow storage bins featured in our Storage Bins for Burning Man guide make excellent secondary containment for many camps. One bin comfortably holds two standard five-gallon gasoline containers while providing a much more durable barrier should a leak occur. The bins also stack neatly in a trailer, protect equipment during transport, and continue serving as useful camp storage long after Burning Man ends.

Like many of the ideas in this guide, this preferred approach does not replace Burning Man’s published requirements. Instead, it builds upon them with a practical solution that has worked well for Atomic Octopus over many years on the playa.
