Camp Sign Creation for Burning Man 2026

As we prepare for Burning Man 2026: Occo Mundi we have been hard at work designing and building art for the new camp. Once we nailed down our designs, it was time for an exciting process: creating our signature camp sign. This is a whole different kind of beast than our front-of-house decor signs. We used CNC tools to cut out the parts, ensuring everything was exactly the way we wanted. Then it came down to painting, assembly, and finishing touches.

From Camp Sign To Bike Racks

We prioritized the camp sign, since we were planning on bringing that with us to our regional campout. After we got back, we got to work on the new sides for the camp bike racks. In the pictures below you can see the back of the Octopus logo getting caulk applied. After being pressed into place, we also stable them into the backing. From there, we do a final touch-up and then apply several layers of clear-coat, which both protects against the elements and helps prevent paint from chipping off and becoming MOOP.

A great camp sign is very important. First, it helps campmates find their way home. After a long day, people can get tired. Also, the camp may look different at night. Because of this, a bright and easy-to-see sign makes life much easier.

During the day, our camp sign stands out with large size and bold colors in the crowd. For example, bright paint, fun shapes, and big letters are easy to spot from far away.

At night, a glowing camp sign becomes even more important. The playa can feel dark and confusing. Sometimes dust storms or crowds make it hard to see. However, lights on a sign can guide campmates safely home. We use fluorescent colors on the signs themselves and UV lights to help them pop at night. Because of this, people spend less time wandering and more time relaxing with friends.

A good camp sign also helps visitors find the camp easily. Friends may want to stop by for coffee, music, art, or fun conversations. If the sign is easy to read, visitors can find the camp without stress. Furthermore, a creative sign can make the camp feel warm and welcoming.

In the end, having a camp sign does much more than mark a campsite. It helps campmates get home safely. It helps visitors find new friends. Most importantly, it turns a camp into a bright beacon in the desert, glowing like a lighthouse in a sea of dust and stars.
