Today, we want to take a moment to celebrate the 40th Burning Man and reflect on an incredible milestone. Forty years ago, on the summer solstice of 1986, a small group of friends gathered on Baker Beach in San Francisco and lit a wooden figure on fire. Although we were not there to witness that first burn, we are grateful it happened. More importantly, we are thankful for the creative journey that followed.

Over the years, Burning Man has grown from a simple gathering into a global source of art, creativity, community, and participation. As a result, countless people have discovered new friendships, new ideas, and new ways to express themselves. Furthermore, the event has inspired artists, makers, dreamers, and adventurers around the world.
There are already a few great pieces that reflect upon the man at 40. Likewise, there are plenty of firsthand accounts that explore the history, culture, and philosophy behind the event. Therefore, we will not attempt to retell those stories here. Instead, we simply want to pause and say: happy 40th Burning Man!
At the moment, we are busy preparing Atomic Octopus Camp for its very first dusty adventure on the playa. Nevertheless, this special anniversary deserves recognition. After all, reaching the 40th Burning Man is an achievement worth celebrating.
Meanwhile, people everywhere are marking the summer solstice in their own unique ways. Some are creating art. Others are gathering with friends and family. Many are sharing meals, music, and stories. In addition, countless people are planning future adventures and dreaming about the next trip to Black Rock City.
As we celebrate the 40th Burning Man, we hope everyone finds a meaningful way to enjoy the day. Whether you are building something creative, supporting your community, reconnecting with old friends, or simply enjoying a beautiful sunset, take a moment to appreciate the spirit that has inspired four decades of imagination and participation.
So, from all of us, happy 40th Burning Man. Here’s to the artists, builders, volunteers, dreamers, and friends who continue to make the journey worthwhile.
