A Special Independence Day Journey
The giant mechanical steampunk octopus known as Occo loved adventure. Deep beneath the dusty floor of the Black Rock Desert in northern Nevada, he spent most of the year resting in a hidden underground workshop filled with brass gears, copper pipes, spinning flywheels, and glowing vacuum tubes. He had loved his trip to the Grand Canyon. Chichen Itza was a magical journey. The Jersey Shore was so much fun. New York City seemed like the trip of a lifetime. However, this year felt different. A very special independence day celebration was approaching, and Occo wanted to see it for himself.
After all, America was preparing to celebrate its 250th birthday. Therefore, cities across the country planned huge events for independence day. When Occo learned about the historic independence day celebration in Washington, DC, his glowing eyes sparkled with excitement.
“I simply must see this,” he said.
So, long before the Fourth of Juplaya arrived in northern Nevada, Occo quietly prepared for another Occo Mundi adventure.
Late one moonlit evening, he slipped out from beneath the playa. The desert winds whispered across the flat landscape while the stars glittered overhead. Meanwhile, most people slept peacefully.
Consequently, nobody noticed the giant steampunk octopus rolling across the desert on eight polished brass wheels hidden beneath his tentacles. His polished brass body reflected the moonlight as he crossed the ancient lakebed.
Soon afterward, Occo pointed himself east and began his journey toward Washington, DC.
Crossing America
At first, Occo traveled through Nevada’s wide-open spaces. Then he crossed mountains, valleys, rivers, and plains.
Along the way, he passed farms, forests, and busy cities. Whenever someone spotted a giant mechanical octopus in the distance, Occo quickly hid behind a hill or a cluster of trees.
Fortunately, his adventures had taught him many clever tricks.
For example, he sometimes disguised himself as unusual farm equipment. At other times, he pretended to be a strange art installation beside a highway.
As a result, he continued his trip without attracting too much attention.
Meanwhile, the closer he came to Washington, DC, the more excitement he could feel in the air. Flags decorated buildings. Red, white, and blue banners fluttered from streetlights. Furthermore, visitors from around the country poured into the city for the historic independence day festivities.
Everywhere he traveled, people talked about America’s 250th birthday. Radio stations played patriotic music. Store windows displayed festive decorations. Small towns and large cities alike prepared for independence day celebrations.
Finally, after many days of travel, Occo reached the nation’s capital, just in time for independence day.
The city amazed him immediately.
Unlike the wide-open Black Rock Desert, Washington, DC buzzed with activity. Grand buildings lined broad avenues. Historic monuments rose above the landscape. Meanwhile, tourists from every corner of the country filled the sidewalks.
Occo could hardly wait to explore.
The Smithsonian Surprise
The next morning, Occo decided to begin his visit at the Smithsonian Institution.
Since he was a machine himself, museums fascinated him. Therefore, he carefully disguised himself as a giant historical exhibit and rolled toward the museum grounds.
To his delight, nobody questioned him.
In fact, several tourists even took pictures beside him.
“What an amazing sculpture!” one visitor exclaimed.
Occo nearly laughed out loud.
Once inside, he explored exhibits filled with inventions, airplanes, spacecraft, and scientific discoveries.

First, he admired early machines that used gears and steam power. Their brass parts reminded him of his own mechanical body.

Next, he visited exhibits featuring famous aircraft.
“What remarkable engineering,” he said while examining the displays.
Soon afterward, he wandered into galleries filled with historic artifacts. There, he learned more about America’s long history and the events that eventually led to independence day celebrations across the nation.
The more he explored, the more he appreciated how much creativity and determination had shaped the country.
As the afternoon passed, Occo continued his tour.

Eventually, he reached exhibits about space exploration. Immediately, his eyes glowed brighter.
Rocket engines, satellites, and moon missions captured his imagination.
For several minutes, he simply stared at a spacecraft.
“One day,” he whispered, “perhaps an octopus can visit the Moon.”
Although that idea sounded ambitious, Occo rarely let small details stop him.

Before leaving, he purchased a tiny souvenir flag from a museum gift shop. The flag looked comically small in one of his giant mechanical tentacles, but Occo proudly carried it anyway.
Independence Day At The Washington Monument

The following day, Occo traveled to the Washington Monument.
The towering structure rose high above the city. From a distance, it looked like a giant stone needle pointing toward the sky.
Naturally, Occo wanted a closer look.
As he approached, he noticed visitors gathering around the monument. Families took photographs while children ran across the grass.
Meanwhile, tour guides shared stories about America’s first president.
Occo listened carefully.
Afterward, he circled the monument several times.
Because he loved engineering, he admired the monument’s simple yet powerful design.
“It doesn’t need moving gears or steam engines,” he observed. “Its strength comes from its purpose.”
That thought stayed with him for much of the day.
Later, Occo found a quiet spot nearby where he could watch the crowds.
Everywhere he looked, people celebrated independence day.
Some carried flags. Others wore patriotic clothing. Still others shared meals with friends and family as they prepared for independence day events.
The atmosphere felt joyful and welcoming.
Consequently, Occo felt grateful that he had made the long trip.
As the afternoon continued, he listened to musicians performing nearby. Children played games on the lawn. Vendors sold snacks and cold drinks.
The entire city seemed united by excitement for independence day.
The Lincoln Memorial

That evening, Occo headed toward the Lincoln Memorial.
As the sun began to set, warm golden light spread across the city.
The memorial stood proudly beside the Reflecting Pool. Large columns surrounded the famous statue of President Lincoln.
Compared to the excitement elsewhere in the city, the memorial felt peaceful.
Therefore, Occo moved quietly.
When he entered the memorial, he gazed up at the enormous statue.
For a moment, he forgot about gears, steam, and adventure.
Instead, he reflected on the ideas that had helped shape the nation.
Visitors spoke softly while they admired the monument.
Meanwhile, the last sunlight painted the marble in shades of gold and orange.
Occo sat near the steps and watched the changing colors.
Then he looked across the Reflecting Pool toward the Washington Monument.
The view took his breath away.
“It is important to remember where a journey begins,” he said thoughtfully. “However, it is equally important to think about where it can lead.”
Although Occo often chased adventure, he appreciated moments of quiet reflection.
As darkness arrived, lights appeared across the city.
Soon, preparations for the big independence day celebration reached their peak.
Workers arranged viewing areas. Security teams prepared for large crowds. Meanwhile, visitors searched for the perfect places to watch the fireworks.
Occo knew the next day would be unforgettable.
Celebrating Independence Day in the Nation’s Capital
Finally, the day everyone awaited arrived.
It was independence day, and not just any independence day.
America celebrated its 250th birthday.
From early morning onward, the city buzzed with energy as millions of people marked independence day across the country.
Music filled the air. Crowds gathered near monuments and parks. Food vendors served delicious treats. Meanwhile, performers entertained visitors throughout the city during the massive independence day celebration.
Occo carefully blended into the festivities.
At times, he disguised himself as an elaborate parade float. At other moments, he pretended to be a moving art installation.
Remarkably, people loved him.
Children waved enthusiastically.
Adults smiled and pointed.
One little girl looked up at him and shouted, “Best parade float ever!”
Occo gave a tiny mechanical wave.
As the day continued, he watched marching bands perform. He listened to patriotic speeches. He enjoyed music from every corner of the country.
Meanwhile, the excitement surrounding independence day continued to grow.

As evening approached, anticipation filled the air.
Everyone awaited the independence day fireworks.
Therefore, Occo selected a perfect viewing location near the National Mall.
The sky gradually darkened.
Then the first firework exploded overhead.

A brilliant burst of red filled the night.
Next came blue, silver, gold, and white.
Boom after boom echoed across the city.
The colorful reflections danced across Occo’s polished brass body.
For nearly an hour, the spectacular display continued.
Some fireworks resembled giant flowers. Others looked like sparkling stars.
Meanwhile, thousands of people cheered.
Occo watched every moment.

Although he had witnessed many remarkable sights during his travels, this independence day celebration felt uniquely special.
The 250th anniversary made this independence day unlike any other he had ever experienced.
For a brief moment, he imagined all the generations who had celebrated before this one. He thought about pioneers, inventors, artists, explorers, and dreamers.
Most importantly, he loved seeing people come together on independence day to celebrate history, community, and hope for the future.
The fireworks reached their grand finale.
Thousands of brilliant lights filled the sky at once.
The crowd erupted with applause.
Occo cheered right along with them.
The Journey Home
Eventually, the fireworks faded.
The crowds slowly dispersed.
Meanwhile, a gentle summer breeze drifted across the city.
Occo knew it was time to return home.
Although he enjoyed Washington, DC, he missed the Black Rock Desert.
He missed the wide-open playa.
And the stars.
He even missed the dusty winds that swept across northern Nevada.
Therefore, before dawn arrived, Occo quietly began the long trip west.
Over the following days, he retraced his route across America.
Along the way, he reflected on everything he had seen.
He remembered the incredible exhibits at the Smithsonian Institution, the towering Washington Monument and the peaceful Lincoln Memorial.
Most of all, he remembered the unforgettable independence day celebration.
In fact, he suspected that this independence day adventure would remain one of his favorite Occo Mundi journeys for many years to come.
Eventually, the familiar landscape of northern Nevada appeared on the horizon.
The Black Rock Desert welcomed him home.
At last, Occo slipped beneath the dusty surface and returned to his hidden underground workshop.
His gears hummed softly.
His steam valves released gentle puffs of vapor.
Then he settled into his favorite resting place.
Before closing his glowing eyes, he smiled.
Another Occo Mundi adventure had come to an end.
However, he already knew something important.
The world remained full of fascinating places, wonderful people, and exciting stories.
Therefore, sooner or later, the great mechanical steampunk octopus would rise from beneath the desert once again.
And when he did, another adventure would surely begin.
Another fun use for the tools is proving to invent a backstory or add some words to dress things up. To celebrate this very special birthday for the United States Of America, we experimented and worked with several different tools and toyed with different styles to come up with a whole bunch of fun images. They do not necessarily follow along with the story, but we love these results.
