Mississippi Riverboat Octopus: A Paddlewheel Adventure Down the Mighty Mississippi

Every so often, when the playa grows quiet and the stars shimmer above the Black Rock Desert, the Atomic Octopus likes to remember the places he has visited. One of his favourite memories is from his time as the Mississippi Riverboat Octopus. After all, even a giant mechanical octopus enjoys looking through old memories.

Some adventures took him high into the mountains. Others carried him across oceans. Meanwhile, a few became so wonderfully strange that they still make his gears creak with laughter.

Mississippi Riverboat Octopus

A World Full of Occo Mundi Adventures

Over the years, Occo has wandered almost everywhere. He explored the mystery of Area 51, where friendly aliens invited him aboard a flying saucer. Later, he celebrated Independence Day in Washington, D.C., while visiting the Smithsonian, the Washington Monument, and the Lincoln Memorial.

Soon afterward, he learned the New York City subway system during his unforgettable Octopus in Manhattan adventure. Although he boarded the wrong train more than once, every stop turned into another funny story.

Then came faster adventures. Occo somehow found himself behind the wheel of a Formula One race car in Qatar during his Octopus Racer journey. Before long, he even tried waterskiing with a shark during his famous Jumping the Shark adventure. Fortunately, everyone stayed dry enough to laugh about it afterward.

His travels also included sunny afternoons at the Jersey Shore, springtime in Paris, a colorful celebration during Mardi Gras in New Orleans, peaceful floating during Octopus Pool Time and his time in Paradise, and even an unforgettable New Year’s Eve beneath the bright lights of Times Square.

Each adventure became another wonderful story waiting to be shared. At the same time, each one makes a perfect excuse to revisit old favorites and discover new ones.

The Time the Mississippi Riverboat Octopus Took the Helm

One memory always makes Occo smile. It happened on a warm evening while he drifted along the mighty Mississippi River aboard a grand old paddlewheel riverboat. The captain stepped away for only a moment.

That was all the invitation a curious octopus needed. With eight polished mechanical tentacles, Occo carefully reached for every lever, valve, wheel, and brass control within sight. One tentacle rang the ship’s bell. Another adjusted the throttle. A third checked the pressure gauges. Two more unfolded a faded river chart across the navigation table.

Before anyone realized what had happened, the enormous steampunk octopus was confidently steering the entire riverboat. The glowing gauges reflected in his bright brass eyes as the giant paddlewheel churned the river into sparkling foam behind the boat. Steam hissed from polished pipes while the whistle echoed across the quiet water.

Down on the lower deck, the crew looked upward in complete amazement. Nobody panicked. Instead, they simply watched as their unusual captain expertly guided the boat around gentle bends in the river. Somehow, every adjustment felt perfectly timed. Perhaps living beneath the Black Rock Desert had taught Occo more about giant machinery than anyone realized.

As twilight settled across the water, the riverboat continued its peaceful journey beneath towering cypress trees draped with Spanish moss. In the distance, the lights of a river city slowly appeared on the horizon. Eventually, the real captain returned to the wheelhouse.

He tipped his hat, thanked Occo for keeping everything on course, and happily accepted the wheel back. Occo responded with a cheerful wave of all eight tentacles before quietly slipping back into passenger mode. Sometimes the best adventures begin simply because someone leaves the helm unattended for five minutes.

More Adventures Still Ahead

Looking back reminds Occo just how remarkable the world can be. From the deserts of Nevada to New Orleans, from Washington, D.C., to New York City, from Formula One race tracks to the Mississippi River, every journey has added another chapter to the growing Occo Mundi collection. Of course, Occo has never been very good at staying home for long.

The Black Rock Desert will always be waiting beneath the Nevada stars. However, somewhere beyond the next horizon, another impossible adventure is almost certainly looking for one curious Mississippi Riverboat Octopus.

And knowing Occo, he’ll probably end up steering it before the trip is over.

Another fun use for the tools is proving to invent a backstory or add some words to dress things up.
