Vehicle Check

You may think that getting ready for Burning Man is all about making art, sewing costumes and checking your tent, but there is so much more to it. If you are getting ready for Burning Man, a thorough vehicle check should be near the top of your preparation list. Every year, thousands of people travel hundreds of miles across highways and deserts to reach Black Rock City. Because of that, your vehicle needs to be just as ready for the journey as your camp gear. Taking a little time now can help you avoid major headaches later. Even better, it gives you confidence that you will make it to the playa and back home safely.

Vehicle Check

Start With the Basics

Begin your vehicle check by inspecting your tires. Check the tread depth carefully and look for cracks, bulges, or uneven wear. Next, confirm that every tire has the proper air pressure, including your spare. After all, a worn tire may survive a short trip around town, but it could easily fail during a long drive through the Nevada desert. Therefore, replacing questionable tires before you leave is almost always the smarter choice.

Once the tires look good, open the hood and inspect the engine compartment. Look over the belts and hoses for signs of wear, cracks, or leaks. Rubber parts naturally age over time, especially in hot climates. As a result, replacing an aging belt or hose before your trip often costs far less than dealing with a roadside breakdown.

Keep Up With Routine Maintenance

Routine maintenance also plays a major role in a successful vehicle check. Make sure you have changed the engine oil and replaced the oil filter if they are due. Likewise, inspect the air filter and replace it if necessary. While you are at it, check the coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Finally, confirm that your battery, brakes, headlights, brake lights, and turn signals all work properly.

These simple tasks do not take long, yet they can prevent frustrating problems once you are on the road. More importantly, they give you peace of mind during the long drive to and from the playa.

Get Help With Your Vehicle Check If You Need It

If you have the mechanical knowledge to perform your own vehicle check, that is fantastic. Many Burners enjoy maintaining their own vehicles and know exactly what to inspect. On the other hand, if vehicle maintenance is outside your comfort zone, ask someone whose expertise you trust to help. A qualified mechanic can often identify developing problems long before they become expensive repairs.

Vehicle Check

Most importantly, do not wait until the day before departure. Finding an issue early gives you time to order parts, schedule repairs, and verify that everything works correctly before you leave. In contrast, discovering a failing water pump, weak battery, or worn brakes at the last minute only adds unnecessary stress.

Learn From Experience

Here at Atomic Octopus, we have learned these lessons firsthand. Over the years, we have dealt with unexpected repairs, last-minute scrambling, blowouts at high speed and even roadside breakdowns while preparing for Burning Man. None of those experiences made the adventure more enjoyable. Instead, they reminded us that completing a careful vehicle check is one of the smartest things you can do before heading to Black Rock City.

Burning Man already delivers plenty of surprises. Fortunately, your transportation does not have to be one of them. Complete your vehicle check well before departure, fix any issues you discover, and hit the road with confidence. A little preparation today can help ensure your biggest adventure happens on the playa, not on the side of the highway.
