Somewhere beneath Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, the Atomic Octopus may be watching. At least, that is the theory behind our ongoing Occo The Day experiment. This time, our offering takes a colorful turn with three wonderfully weird Sugar Skull Octopus creations.
Created a couple of months ago, these three images blend two things we clearly enjoy: octopuses and delightfully elaborate art. Each creature features a different interpretation of sugar skull decoration, complete with brilliant colors, ornate patterns, glittering details, and plenty of personality.

Three Sugar Skull Octopus Creations
Although the three images share a common theme, each Sugar Skull Octopus has its own character.
One has the tall, almost totem-like shape of a tiny eight-legged guardian. Its huge decorated eye and curled tentacles give it an appropriately strange presence.

Meanwhile, another takes the sugar skull idea much more literally. A decorated skull rises above a collection of purple tentacles. The result falls somewhere between Día de los Muertos folk art and a creature that escaped from a particularly festive underwater dimension.
Finally, the third octopus takes a softer approach. Its rounded purple body sparkles under the lights, while colorful decorations surround its eyes. Curled tentacles and tiny suction cups complete the look.
Together, the trio makes a wonderfully surreal little collection.

Appeasing the Atomic Octopus
Of course, there is a very serious reason for all this silliness.
In our efforts to appease the Atomic Octopus that lives beneath the Black Rock Desert, we continue making these offerings. Our hope is that it will bestow great weather conditions upon Burning Man 2026. Therefore, we humbly present another Octopus Of The Day, better known around here as Occo The Day.
Our theory remains scientifically questionable but emotionally compelling: the more fun, weird octopus pictures we make, find, and share, the better our chances become.
