Today marks an exciting milestone for Atomic Octopus. Occo has sent us word that his Occo Mundi travels have concluded, and he is ready for us in the Black Rock Desert. The countdown to Burning Man 2026 has reached a new stage, and our first build team members are officially leaving Las Vegas for Black Rock City. After months of planning, gathering supplies, and checking equipment, it is finally time to hit the road. Away we go, even though the gates do not open for participants until the evening of Saturday, August 29. Placed theme camps receive early access so they can begin building the city that thousands of Burners will soon call home.
The Journey to Black Rock City Begins
The drive from Las Vegas to the Black Rock Desert is a long one. Nevertheless, our crew could not be more excited. Every mile brings them closer to another unforgettable year on the playa. Along the way, they will haul trailers filled with camp gear, shade structures, tools, and art. Once they arrive, the real work begins.
Building Atomic Octopus
First, the team will build the camp’s shade structures. These provide a comfortable place for everyone to gather during the event. Next, they will assemble the camp itself and begin setting up the artwork. Every task takes teamwork, patience, and determination. Fortunately, our volunteers have spent months preparing for this moment. Their hard work before the event makes the entire build process smoother once they reach Black Rock City.
Of course, no one controls the weather (we hope our Occo The Day posts have helped). Therefore, we hope the early crew enjoys calm winds, cool mornings, and steady progress throughout build week. A successful build always starts with a safe journey. We wish every member of the team safe travels, reliable vehicles, and an enjoyable trip across the Nevada desert.

Most importantly, we cannot wait to share Atomic Octopus with the Burning Man community once the city comes alive. Our giant steampunk octopus will once again emerge from beneath the playa, ready to welcome curious visitors throughout the week. Even better, our Time-Traveling Coffee Bar will return with fresh coffee, friendly conversations, and a little playful imagination for anyone who stops by.
