Atomic Octopus Disco Playlist: Four Hours of Funk, Soul & Studio 54 Magic

When people think about music at Burning Man, they often picture towering sound systems and all-night dance camps. We love that, too! However, Atomic Octopus is taking a different approach. We are not a sound camp, and you will not find massive speakers or scheduled DJ performances here. Instead, we are creating a welcoming front-of-house atmosphere with carefully curated playlists playing through a few modest speakers for campmates and visitors to enjoy throughout the week. To help set the mood, we’ve put together our very own Atomic Octopus Disco Playlist for everyone to experience on the playa.

Atomic Octopus Disco Playlist

That philosophy inspired the Atomic Octopus Disco Playlist, a collection of more than four hours of timeless dance music that celebrates one of the most joyful genres ever recorded.

A Celebration of Disco Music

Disco has never really disappeared. In fact, many of today’s dance music producers still borrow its infectious grooves, live instrumentation, and irresistible bass lines. Therefore, it felt only natural to dedicate one of our genre playlists to the music that filled dance floors throughout the 1970s.

This playlist features more than four hours of disco classics, soulful anthems, and unforgettable dance favorites. Whether you’re relaxing in camp with friends or getting ready for an evening adventure across Black Rock City, these songs bring positive energy that never goes out of style.

Although every track predates Trilo’s DJ career, this is the music he grew up hearing on the radio and dancing to long before he ever stepped behind a pair of turntables. As a result, the playlist feels both nostalgic and deeply personal.

Two New Mixtapes Join the Party

The Atomic Octopus Disco Playlist also introduces two brand-new mixtapes created especially for camp.

The first, Disco Disco, is a seamless journey through a wide range of beloved 1970s disco favorites. Meanwhile, Elemental shines a spotlight on one of the greatest bands of the era, Earth, Wind & Fire. Their blend of funk, soul, jazz, pop, and disco has remained timeless for decades, making them a perfect fit for the Atomic Octopus music collection.

Together, these mixes complement the playlist while adding a continuous listening experience for anyone who enjoys classic dance music.

Cover Art Worth Dancing About

Every Occo Music playlist also creates another excuse to make art.

Because these playlists live inside the music players used around camp instead of being public displays, Trilo and the Atomic Octopus crew began experimenting with generative artwork simply for fun. The result is a growing collection of colorful cover images that celebrate each playlist’s personality.

For the disco collection, that meant creating an exuberant purple octopus beneath a giant mirrored disco ball, complete with sparkling lights, oversized sunglasses, and enough funky style to make Studio 54 proud. The playful artwork captures the same upbeat spirit found throughout the music itself.
